Drinking Water Chemical Treatment

Course Number: To be assigned

Discipline:   Drinking Water

Course Approval:  To be approved

CEUs Assigned: 0.6

Course Agenda:  Located here

This course is designed to introduce the drinking water operator to the exciting world of chemical treatment of drinking water systems. This is an introductory course and information is limited, though the operator is encouraged to pursue addition information apart from this course.

While many drinking water systems are able to withdraw water from wells dug deep in the ground, and supply that water to their residents without adding chemical, but many other groundwater and surface water system do add chemicals. Chemicals are needed for three purposes:

1) To improve the water quality of the water to meet drinking water standards;

2) To improved water quality to meet end use quality for commercial and industrial users; and
3) To protect the distribution system from corrosion and regrowth.

This course introduces the operator to the many uses of chemicals in water treatment, whether to treat surface water or groundwater. This included chemical treatment for pH adjustment, chemical replacement (softening and ion exchange), disinfection, dechlorination, coagulation, oxygenation, taste and odor control, and fluoridation. Each process discussion includes chemicals available, chemical storage, chemical application, and chemical control. Come and see how chemicals can be used in your own water system.

There will be a lot of discussion and examples. All are welcome and I look forward to meeting new friends and seeing old ones. The cost of this six-hour course (0.6 CEU's) is $120.00, and of course refreshments are provided.
