Disinfection is the application of antimicrobial agents to non-living surfaces/substances to destroy microorganisms that are living on that surface or within that substance. This class presents the regulatory requirements for drinking water disinfection, the microorganisms that are the subject of disinfection, the environmental concerns surrounding disinfection, the disinfectants, and the impacts from disinfection. The information contained in this class allows the operator to evaluate his/her own water system and chose the best disinfection system for his/her water system. The operator can also use this information to choose a disinfection system to provide for long-lasting disinfection in the distribution system, or for short duration to avoid disinfection by-products.
