ENGINEERING SERVICES

Shaffers Engineering and Consulting has extensive training and experience in all aspects of water engineering, including storm water, surface water, ground water, drinking water, and wastewater.  Jerry Shaffer, the principle,  has a masters degree in engineering with a focus on water and water quality
To help offset the cost of college, Jerry worked summers designing and installing sprinkler system in southern Idaho.  He later worked for a plumber repairing plumbing systems and installing piping, appurtenances, and fixtures, a job that gives a person many interesting stories, but  ones which cannot be told around the dinner table.
Once Jerry's formal education was complete, he worked for Wyatt Jaykim Engineering and then the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality, retiring there after 23 years of service.  During the 2+ decades that Jerry worked there he performed the same services that is offered now at Shaffers Engineering and Consulting, plus a few more services like hazardous waste remediation.

DRINKING WATER INSPECTION SERVICES
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting performs drinking water inspections to not only uncover regulatory flaws in your system, but more importantly to identify weaknesses and construction flaw that could compromise your system and public health.  And, unlike the regulatory communities, I will point out the positive points in your system.

WASTEWATER INSPECTION SERVICES
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting performs inspections on wastewater reuse permitted systems and NPDES permitted systems, ranging in size from very small to systems with connects of tens of thousands, and from those with wastewater lagoons to those with activated sludge and extended aeration.  These reports point out the strengths and weaknesses of your system and identify items that would be identified in a state or EPA inspection, but without the associated fines.

DRINKING WATER SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION SERVICES
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting performs drinking water optimization inspections on drinking water systems, or assists systems to set up their own optimization teams.  This optimization process is designed to identify weak areas in the system in order to increase production, performance and reliability.  A simple adjustment to a treatment plant's sedimentation may allow a plant to 100+ NTU water whereas before the treatment plant would have had to shut down.

DRINKING WATER SYSTEM EVALUATION AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting assists drinking water system that have identified problem with their system, or that have drinking water violation included in inspection reports.  These problems may include the inability to meet water quality limits at different times of the year, or that have low pressure areas in their distribution system, or merely not being able to locate required documents at critical times, like during inspections.

WASTEWATER SYSTEM EVALUATION AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting assists wastewater system that have identified problem with their system, or that have permit violation included in reuse or NPDES inspection reports.  These problems may include the inability to meet permit limits at different times of the year, or that experience problems like low pH, foaming issues, sludge blanket rising, and so forth.

DRINKING WATER SYSTEM PLANNING
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting assists drinking water systems in evaluating the present condition of their system and assist the community with the identification of future water quality and quantity demands, along with possible solutions.  This service also includes recommendation on the installation of equipment that is used to gather essential data for the decision-making process.

REGULATORY LIAISON
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting assists communities in working with regulatory agencies by "translating" the requirements of these agencies to the community in terms that they can understand, allowing systems to communicate effectively with the agency and be a part of the solution.  Sometimes communities and systems feel they have no say when working with the state or federal governments, but they do have a lot to say.

ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTS PREPARATION
Shaffers Engineering and Consulting prepares environmental documents for drinking water and wastewater system projects.  One of the more complicated processes in upgrading drinking water and wastewater systems, and one that can delay construction for years is the environmental review and subsequent environmental document.  With this process, the "who you know" is about as important as the "what you know," and Shaffers Engineering and Consulting has developed ties with agencies that must sign off on the environmental document.
